The Institut
The Institute for Applied Demography (IFAD) is a non-profit scientific institution with close work and research contacts to the university area.
Since its foundation in 1992, the IFAD has been dealing with a wide
range of historical-theoretical, empirical-practical and prognostic
research. The focus here is on politics-related issues in demography,
especially demographic change and its effects on the Eastern German
Federal States.
Research fields of the institute refer to:
- Basic processes of demographic developments; Forecasts, fertility patterns and family formation processes in Germany
-
Development trends of specific life situations and life situations of
certain population groups;
Processes of social structure development and social segregation in problematic urban regions; Desolation of rural areas - Income development, consumption and prosperity, processes of social differentiation and the development of different lifestyles
Particular importance is attached to basic demographic research, as is clearly
documented by numerous of the well over 100 publications of the IFAD edition.
The institute sees itself as a fundamental prerequisite for successful
cooperation with various partners from the fields of politics, science and
business. This is borne out by a wide range of IFAD contract research projects
for the federal government, the federal states and municipalities, for parties,
organizations, associations and business enterprises as well as numerous
scientific events, discussion groups, colloquia and media presentations.
The institute is responsible for the only university demographic courses in Berlin.
Semester and diploma theses are prepared and supervised by students of social and
economic sciences at the institute. Internships are also carried out by students
and graduates of social science training institutions at the institute.
